I think for most people, they wake up not realizing they have a choice. I sometimes still wake up and can’t see the choices in front of me. I get into a “fixed world” where nothing is malleable.
I wake up sometimes listening to a fixed world that was there way before me, not realizing that it is only a perception. A way of looking at things and a way of listening to things.
In my work with Landmark Worldwide they have a distinction called “Already Always Listening.” Before anyone speaks, we are Already Always Listening. We listen through a filter and we accept many of the things we hear as fixed and solid.
The filter is there for everyone and for the most part, we are blind to it. Only when someone points out the filter to us do we realize it is there and we are listening to the filter.
We have a way of listening to someone we love and respect as opposed to someone we do not. When married couples loose love and respect they neglect the suggestion of their mate while they readily accept the same counsel from a trusted loved one
We have a way of listening to those we love and respect and we have a way of listening to those whom we don't..
Listening through this filter clouds our vision of what is possible for us and for others. Someone says that we can’t sing and it is fixed and solid, especially if that person is an authority figure.
It is fixed and solid and we never sing again. At least not in front of others.
Someone tells us we can’t dance and now that is no longer available to us. We want to feel safe and secure and for us doing something someone has told us we can't, does not feel safe and secure
So there is no venturing out into this risky part of life and yet that is where aliveness occurs. That is where transformation and being alive happens. Waiting for us, outside our comfort zone.
So, what will you do today? Who will you listen to and what will you put at risk to be alive? Who will you choose to be today?
